    Description

Antique 19th C. Silk Flower Millinery Die Tool ~ Makers Marked PARIS 5.5"
The height of the millinery trade in Paris, occurred from around 1875 to 1914, and was often reflected in the work of the Impressionist painters. At this time there were around 1,000 milliners working in what was then considered the fashion capital of the world.  This die would have been used to make the silk flower leaves that often accompanied the ribbons, bows and feathers adorning the hats of the period.
The artificial flower trade of the time was so robust that there were an estimated 24,000 flower-makers working in Paris to create botanically accurate flowers: sumptuous silk roses, leaves, and ferns for hats.
